While in the ‘burbs yesterday I spotted a bag of the new Late Night “Tacos at Midnight” flavor Doritos. I love Doritos…I love tacos…these should be the best things ever, right?
Well, they’re not that good. They don’t taste anything like tacos. Elizabeth says they sort of taste like Old El Paso taco seasoning, but my tongue either doesn’t know or doesn’t care. It’s a sort of hybrid flavor, but it didn’t do anything for me. Gimme cool ranch or the classic flavor.
Would we buy another bag of “Tacos at Midnight” Doritos? No.
On a more pleasant note, we diversified our selections at the Inwood taco cart yesterday with a steak burrito (massive and awesome!), a lengua, aka beef tongue, taco (one of the finest tongue tacos I’ve ever had) and a pork gordita. I’ve never actually had an authentic Mexican gordita, just the Taco Bell kind. The taco cart gordita was delicious, a mix of pork, lettuce and tomato, spices and sauce inside a thick, deep-fried corn tortilla. Foodgasm.

I love that they’ve forgone naming the food-stuff with actual real-life food flavors.
They could have just as easily gone with ‘yellow’ flavored Doritos, or ‘Tuesday’ flavored Doritos,or possibly ‘disgruntled employee’, ‘sweaty gymnast’ or ‘morning traffic’ flavored Doritos. It no longer appears to make any difference for consumers, which I find absolutely marvelous.

The other “late night” flavor, the Jalapeno Poppers ones, are pretty damn tasty, though. Recommended!

I’m just saying right now, that if they make “Disgruntled Employee” flavored Doritos, I’m buying a bag.

I respectfully disagree with a previous poster about the Jalapeno Popper flavored Doritos. They are horrid. They’re the flavor of really disgusting poppers.
In fact, the only thing that saved dinner last night were the Boodles gin-and-tonics consumed with Sour Punch Strivin’-Strawberry Flavored Sour Straws.

We realized almost immediately upon buying a bag that they taste overly chili-powdered and cheap, much like the tacos you can get at midnight, which basically means Taco Bell.

Yeah, I have to say that I agree with you, not the previous commenter.

I love them! They taste just like tacos to me, but hey, I sometimes like cheap tacos over mire upscale/authentic. The jalepeno poppers are good too. Pringles is doing something similiar, they have all sorts of flavors. Taco dip or something, onion blossom(like the Outback onion), pickle, and much more…

These chips fascinate me just because the name makes them sound so awful. The great thing is, though, that here in Tucson, which is like a Little Mexico, Taco Bell is the most foolish option for tacos at midnight because of all of the actual, authentic late-night Mexican food joints and taco carts around town. So a taco at midnight might not be so bad.
